Exercise for Business English: Greatest Entrepreneurs

BusinessWeek magazine listed the greatest entrepreneurs of all time on criteria that included mass commerce and distribution of wealth. My choice for the most interesting entrepreneurs on the list is Muhammad Yunus.
He won Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his banking system Grameen Bank in Bangladesh. The bank directed its loans to poor women who couldn’t get credit from a normal bank. With the loans from Yunus’s bank the women are able to start their own profit-making enterprises and with time rise from poverty. The loans have low interest and the women pay the loan back in the slow run, when their business develops.
I think Muhammad Yunus is a great entrepreneur, because he has developed sources of livelihood for women in Bangladesh. Maybe trough these enterprises women are able to put their daughters to school and so pass on this development to the upcoming generations. All in all, Yunus has encouraged others to start their own enterprises and so distributed wealth widely to the places where it didn’t beforehand exist.

  1. Muhammed Yunus was also for me an option for the greatest entrepreneur because of his unique and kind work. Did you know that they even have an official Muhammed Yunus Day in Houston, Texas? It is the 14th of January. That shows that he is a real business angel, i would say!
